Jack

“We going in?” I asked James as he kept his hands at ten and two on the wheel, his foot still on the brake. Five minutes had passed since we got to our childhood home. After all the recent revelations, I didn’t know what to think.

My mother selling Gracie was the least expected. In the same daze as me over the news, James hadn’t blinked while his eyes sat on the upper-level window. That pane of glass showed Jen’s old room. The last room I held Gracie in.

I remembered her coos and hums when I let my hand graze her in her sleep. She’d always smile and bite her lip with no conscious memory of it.

Our beds were her home away from home. All of us slept better when she slept beside us.

One thing I never admitted to anyone was that I didn’t do sleepovers with women. All of my past lovers were booty calls without a commitment to stay.

My heart knew it stemmed from no one being able to replace Gracie. No one fit against me the way she did.

How pliable she was as we nestled into the sheets. Nothing felt like work when I stayed with her.

Other women? I had to fight myself to hold them after a round. I had to force myself not to be an asshole to them because they didn’t know Gracie went right to where she belonged.

Along my side, her leg would always rest over my thigh. She was the type of girl that you didn’t need to be sexual with. I wanted to be, but just being with her settled my soul.

Now, I ruined it all because I couldn’t cope with the pain residing in my chest. I didn’t know how to be that man who lightened her mood.

Hell, I still struggled to look at her. I hated that she left. None of that changed. Even with knowing she had been sold, I couldn’t get over her absence.

The rift between us might have a reason, but the divide still too great to seal up. My soul was jealous of my brother’s quickness to forgive, but something inside of me wouldn’t let me do the same.

Rage fueled me instead of her sweetness. I couldn’t figure out how to let it go.

James cleared his throat. “Yeah. Let’s get this over with.”

Resigned, knowing our mother did the unfathomable didn’t sit well with any of us. He turned off the car. We went in to face our mother, together.

Of course, we were greeted with the sight of our philandering father bringing in another one of his bimbos. The maid giggled as our dad squeezed her ass under her ridiculous black and white uniform. No doubt, he bought it.

“Joseph, please,” my mother sounded forlorn. She entered the foyer from the other direction. “I’d really appreciate it if you kept this out of the house.”

The maid scurried off, knowing which spouse signed her checks. Smart move, but she’d be gone by tomorrow.

“The house? Maria, this is our house.” Our father leered at her.
